Publisher | Society members receive online access to journals as part of membership. History: Beginning in the early twentieth century, interest in the endocrine glands increased at a constantly accelerated pace. Enthusiasm tended to outstrip discretion and exploitation of inadequate knowledge came to be a reproach. By the year 1916, it had become evident that an organized effort should be made to encourage sound developments and to curb abuses in this field. To this end, The Association for the Study of Internal Secretions was initiated and a permanent organization was effected on June 4, 1917. The Certificate of Incorporation of The Society was filed in the offices of the Secretary for the State of Delaware on January 13, 1918. The official name of the organization was changed to The Endocrine Society on January 1, 1952. Annual Meetings have been held since 1916 except in 1943 and 1945 during the World War II when meetings were canceled at the request of the United States Government. Realizing the increasing importance of endocrinology to general medicine, the Council in 1947 established an annual post graduate assembly now known as the Clinical Endocrinology Update. The first issue of Endocrinology was published in January 1917. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology was established in 1914, and the name of the journal was changed to The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism on January 1, 1952. |

Granting Agency | EPIPGX (Epilepsy Pharmacogenomics: delivering biomarkers for clinical use) EpiPGX is working to find genomic variants that predict or explain clinically-relevant responses and adverse reactions to antiepileptic drugs. Establishing variants that are of clinical value will contribute to improved patient care, precision medicine, stratification for clinical trials and ultimately improved quality of life for people with epilepsy and the best use of increasingly stretched healthcare resources. Determining which drug might suit, and which drug should be avoided, for each individual person with epilepsy should enable the right drugs to be utilised early during disease course, which in turn should reduce some of the adverse outcomes of the epilepsies, and make best use of the global investment in drug development which has already taken place. It may even lead to the resurrected use of drugs that are currently out of favour because of their unpredictable but serious adverse effects and should also provide insights into both drug mechanisms of action and disease biology. EpiPGX therefore represents an important investment in the better understanding and management of the epilepsies. |

I realized last week that exactly 10 years ago, the EuroEPINOMICS Rare Epilepsy Syndrome (RES) consortium pushed the button for the second round of trio exome sequencing, a pivotal event in the history of epilepsy genetics that led to the discovery of more than a dozen genes for developmental and epileptic encephalopathies. The fact that this critical juncture in the history of epilepsy gene discovery went largely unnoticed lies within the nature of research consortia – they form, they work, and they disperse.
